Rogelio Mauricio Harris, 34 was stopped by US Immigration agents at Los Angeles International Airport as he was about to board a flight to Japan.
When his luggage was examined, a box of 45 bars of chocolate was discovered inside. When officers looked closer, they discovered each of the bars contained amphetamines.
Officers had the 2kgs of powder analysed and it tested positive for meth-amphetamine.
The drug had been coated in a chocolate-like substance to make the bars look real and would have sold for as much of £160,000 on the streets of Japan.
Harris has been charged with possession of meth-amphetamine with intent to supply - an offence which carries a mandatory penalty of 10 years in prison.
"This scheme involved considerable planning and prep and shows the lengths smugglers will go to elude detection," said homeland security agent Claude Arnold.
"The fact this use was detected should serve as a deterrent for others who might be considering trying similar tactics to conceal dangerous contraband."
Other attempts to smuggle drugs through Los Angeles airport have included concealing the contraband in items such as Easter eggs, food bags and cans of refried beans.
